NHS Healthcare Provider, Midlands, UK. Designed and delivered a service improvement and leadership development programme. The programme had a ‘field and forum’ design and ran over six weeks. Participants spend one day each week learning together (‘forum’), then two days doing project work applying what they learned (‘field’). Graduates are able to go on to lead further improvement projects independently. After being set up with our support, a train-the-trainer component means the programme is now run entirely in-house by former participants, and is approaching its ten year anniversary. Winner of a national award, the approach is now being adopted by a major European healthcare system.
Network of 12 NHS hospitals, UK. Designed and delivered an innovative one year leadership development programme for hospital chief executives and senior clinical leaders. Uniquely, to our knowledge, the programme supported leaders at 3 levels in the organisation simultaneously – chief executive, clinical director, service manager. Focusing on leadership of change in complex systems, participants made substantial, sustained productivity and quality gains verified by an independent King’s College London audit. The approach is cited on the National Institute for Clinical Excellence website as a ‘high impact change initiative’, and graduates went on to national and international leadership positions.
